Crochet Mouse

Make a sweet little mouse for a sweet little child.

The mouse pictured was made with an E4 3.5mm hook using white Bernat Softee Baby (weight 3) with the pink details in knitpicks comfy sport (flamingo). Any yarn or hook size may be used.

HEAD:

Row 1:
Chain 2, 6 hdc in first loop, slip stitch connect into a ring. (6 stitches)
Row 2:
Put 2 hdcs in each hdc from the previous row. Slip stitch connect (12 stitches)
Row 3:
Chain 1. hdc 1 in first stitch of previous row, *2 hdc in next stitch, hdc once in each of next 2 stitches. Repeat from * to end, slip stitch connect. (16 stitches)
Row 4, 5:
Chain 1, One hdc in each stitch of previous row, slip stitch to connect. (16 stitches)
Row 6, 7:
Chain 1. hdc in first stitch of previous row. *decrease over next 2 stitches, put one hdc in each of next 2 stitches. Repeat from * to end. Slip stitch to connect.
Row 8:
Stuff head, then decrease all around, put yarn through stitches and pull closed.

EARS:

Row 1:
Chain 2, 6hdc in first loop, slip stitch connect into a ring.
Row 2:
chain 1, hdc twice in each stitch around, connect. (12 stitches)
Row 3:
chain 1, hdc twice in each stitch around, connect. (24 stitches)
Row 4:
chain 1, hdc twice in each stitch around, connect. (48 stitches)

Work 2 ears in white, leaving a long tail. Then work 2 in pink, omitting Row 4 and leaving a long tail. Use a yarn needle to sew the pink circles onto the white ones, then a crochet hook to attach white ears to head at sides. Weave in tails with yarn needle.

BODY:

Row 1:
Pick up 4 stitches across bottom of head, grabbing tail of yarn as well as the working thread for double thickness.
Row 2:
Chain 1, work an hdc in the back loop of each stitch, and then 3 more hdcs in the front loops. Slip stitch to close. (7 stitches)
Row 3:
Chain 1, work an hdc in each stitch of previous row. (7 stitches)
Row 4:
Chain 1, put 2 hdc in each stitch of the previous row. (14 stitches)
Row 5:
Chain 1, put 2 hdc in each stitch of the previous row. (28 stitches)
Row 6:
Chain 1, hdc in one stitch, then make an arm: chain 8, then hdc back along chain and continue row for about 12 stitches before working another arm and completing row.
Row 7-16:
work 10 rows straight.

FEET:

Chain 3, connect back to base of loop, chain 4, slip stitch back down chain to base, chain 3, connect back to base. Pinch bottom closed and start single crocheting across, catching a stitch from both front and back edge as you go. Stop at middle and chain 16 for tail, then work back up: 4 slip stitches, 4 single crochets, and finally 4 hdcs. Stuff the body and continue sealing bottom edge with single crochets to second foot position. Work another foot and finish off.

FINISHING:

Use a yarn needle to tie two short lengths of black yarn to nose. Use yarn needle to put loops of pink thread over the center of whiskers to form nose. Use yarn needle to make crosses at eye positions.
