Bookmarks

By special request... bookmarks! These should print out at 5 inches by 1.5 inches @ 200 dpi. Suggested printing method: (1) right click "save target as" on the square icon below, or right click save as on the actual bookmark itself to save to disk. (2) Open Word/WordPerfect and set the margins so that text width is 5 inches. (3) Choose "insert -> picture" from the menu and insert the bookmark. This should automatically set the size/resolution properly. If not, select "Format picture" and adjust the settings so that it prints out the correct size. (4) Print as usual. Cut apart and laminate (clear packing tape works well if you don't have a laminator)

Most of these are re-workings of existing collages. I may occassionally do one specifically for a bookmark, but mostly, I'll probably just appropriate something... there are also a few other collages throughout the site that might work as bookmarks due to their shape. For example: flower, rest, justwillow, skin, etc. Of course, if you don't mind more index-card shaped bookmarks, just about any image in the site will work ;-)

Ann has thoughtfully provided: further advice for the bookmark enthusiast:

1. Print out two copies of the image (or two equal sized different images) and cut them out with meticulous precision. Run a gluestick down the centre with the aim, not of gluing them together but of getting enough cohesion to stop movement while you cover them - this also enables you to compare one side with the other and get really fussy about pruning off any bits of white that you can still see...

2. Laminating is wonderful, packing tape is a good alternative but it will yellow in the fullness of time, so clear bookcovering material (marketed here as 'Contact' or 'Duraseal') is better. Cut two pieces somewhat larger than the finished bookmark. Do NOT be tempted to cut one piece and fold it over - that way lies air pockets, crinkles, wrinkles and high blood pressure. Peel off the backing and lay the first piece sticky side up on a hard smooth surface. Now line up the top edge of the bookmark with a straight edge of the plastic allowing for an eighth of an inch border and roll the bookmark onto the stickiness. Then run the side of your hand down the paper to squish out the air bubbles. Peel the backing off the next piece and hold it by the edges so that is dips in the middle, lower the middle on to the bookmarks middle and then roll the remaining plastic down each end. Starting in the middle, using the side of your hand again, firmly push along to the end of the bookmark thus ensuring maximum adhesion and minimum air bubbles.

If you find you have bubbles anyway, take a fine needle and make a small hole in the bubble - then slowly and with great patience ease the air out so that the hole does not get any bigger.

3. Trim plastic to within an eighth of an inch of the paper.

Cheers!

Ann (based on 20 years of book covering experience - Gahd, that's a lotta books!)
