THE STORY:
Happy New Year! Today (1/1/2008) seemed an appropriate day to release this vid because:
  • It's my first vid in almost two years. yikes!
  • It's my first vid for source that has nothing to do with Joss Whedon whatsoever!
  • It's my first vid using animated source!
  • It's the first vid I'm releasing in flash video!
  • It's the first vid I used DVD-based source for!

So there you have it. Shiny and new all over. Honestly I don't even know if it's any good as far as vids goes, I just know I had a lot of fun making it. After all this time, it took pretty much a perfect storm of factors to get me moving again. We were in the midst of our annual Christmas Escaflowne Marathon when I first heard this song. And instantly connected the first verse to Van. And realized, hey 26 1/2 hour episodes, when you boil it down, that's like 8 hours of material. I can handle 8 hours of source! Compared to, oh, say multiple seasons of hour long shows...

I pretty much went with the flow making this, no real intellectual planning phase to speak of. I think it came out comprehensible to people who have never watched the series, but then again, this was our 6th year of the Marathon (when you pay $280 for a box set, you want to get your money's worth!) so I'm pretty deeply familiar with the source. The good news is that in the intervening 5 years since I bought it, you can now pick up a set for a mere $45, probably cheaper used, and of course Netflix is a charming option. So if your curiosity is piqued... go forth! Giant Battling Mechanized Armors, Fire Breathing Dragons, A Plucky Girl Track Star, A Lonely Young Dispossessed King, Visions of Firey Doom, Tragically Sundered Siblings, Magic Wings, The Lost Secret of Atlantis, Cat Girls, the Ancient Evil of Sir Isaac Newton, and so much more, all in one sprawling story. What's not to love?
